The Mind Spa - Tue 13 July

Join me tomorrow evening 6.30-8.30pm for The Mind Spa at Molton House, private members club, London W1.
It’s an evening for professionals, business owners and those looking for peace and progress in all aspects of their lives.

It’s really an opportunity to connect to yourself: we have such busy minds and such busy lives. It will help you to relax, chill our and take stock. There’ll be a short relaxation meditation led by my guest and friend, yoga teacher to execs, Thierry Giunta. They’ll also be an opportunity to connect with others; many networking occasions can be soul-less. By connecting more deeply with ourselves we tend to be more open to others. The evening is an ideal space to make the kind of contacts that may be useful for us personally, professionally and business. I will also be doing a very short exercise to help you focus on personal and professional priorities.

Tomorrow is attracting a fair amount of media interest and the attendees also include a number of people from healing professions as well as some who are in corporate life or changing career. If that appeals then join me and our host Jessica Huie of JHPR for a lovely evening.

Long term unemployed to dream job in weeks with Rasheed

Last year two film-makers asked me to work with David, one of thousands of gifted Britons made redundant due to the global economic downturn. My job; to get his career back on track- here’s what happened. Top Tips below:

Throughout the UK and indeed across the world many people are losing their jobs. One of these people may be you or a loved one. In the past redundancy was rare. Now it’s common place - it may not just happen once but two to five times in your career. Whilst redundancy can be devastating it can be the birthplace of you finding a life and career that you really feel happy with. When I run my workshops over 90% say it proved to be a blessing. However it takes time. And if you or a loved one has, is or may face redundancy then a few tips will help you to use this opportunity to create a profession from your passion.

1. Give yourself time and space to be, breathe, reflect and even grieve. It is a major event and taking this time will help you move forward for more happily.

2. Find out exactly what the redundancy will mean: and your options / entitlements. Now is not a time to be shy and retiring and you need to get what you’re entitled. Once you do this list and identify your monthly budget and outgoings and set a ‘survival budget’. If you get a redundancy sum budget and use it wisely it may take months to settle into your next role.

3. Seek support and start to network: from friends and loved ones - and professionals in / beyond work who can help you. Above all share it with those you trust and love. You may also find that there are professionals in your circle who can help you move forward. Don’t suffer in silence

4. Take time: to consider what you really want to do next in your life and career and follow your heart. Redundancy is your opportunity for you to really identify what you are passionate about and to make a profession out of it.

5. Practicals: Brush up your CV and your interview skills, identify all your strengths and skills. Ensure you stand out. Include a powerful personal statement at the top. Make sure that it highlights your accomplishments and keep it to two pages maximum.

6. Get hold of my ‘Moving ahead in your career free guide’ - visit my resources page on my website www.rasaru.com . It will help you focus on what you want in a job

7. Write a list of all the people you know who can help you (inc contacts, friends, former colleagues and who they know). Call or make appointments to meet and chat with anyone who may be able to help you. Less than 50% of jobs are advertised. Increasing numbers of people find their new careers throughout networking. Explore how you can help them too, life is merely changing and exchanging energy.

8. When applying for jobs: keep spoken/ written correspondence clear, crisp, concise and captivating. Be personal, professional, passionate and prompt. Always shine and smile. These elements will help you stand out from the crowd. Being you is key.

9. Spread the net: include internet, networking, agencies, contacts as well as newspapers for your job search.

10. Tell people: You probably know 200 people or more tell them what you’re looking for…together you may find it… It’s a small world.

Finally take it in steady steps. Know when to work and when to rest. Learn from setbacks and disappointments and know that these will make you even sharper and stronger over time. You may find, like myself, that redundancy actually becomes the moment that you move from a job to the very reason that you are here – utilising all your skills and talents.

Trying to change a person? Time to change your perspective

Trying to change another person? It is faster and more effective to change your perspective.

Yesterday I met with a good friend of mine who was somewhat displeased with the actions and poor and sporadic communications from one of their friends. Understandably he found the situation frustrating and annoying - especially as this has been an ongoing problem.

Perhaps this scenario has or is happening to you. That you’re annoyed about how somebody else is. Or perhaps that you want them to act or be somehow different to how they are. There are really two issues here:

1. Know what your standards and values are and to communicate them clearly and kindly to those concerned
so that they know what their ‘contract’ with you is. It is a two way street so they should feel free to do the same and you hopefully agree and live by this code.

2. If someone continually does not meet your standards / values or ‘contract’ then it is ultimately an issue for you and not them. People are at where they are at - for that time in their lives at least. It may be unrealistic to expect a second division footballer to play to a premiership standard. In other words it may be that they are unable and or unwilling to be how you want them to be. If this is the case then you must decide what you want to do - live with it or move on.

These issues will arise for almost of us at one time or another. In fact it will arise many times in life in personal, romantic, working, business, family and social relationships. If this is arising for you now then welcome the frustration that you feel. Listen to it’s root. What is it telling you. If you have done step 1 to communicate this and if there is no progress it may time to downscale or even move on from that relationship.

If you do part ways do it warmly, kindly and wishing the other well. It may quite rightly be time for new possibilities and people more apt to where you are both at, or heading to, to come into your lives. in this way life is fluent.

But when all is said and done it is wiser to change your perspective than to try and change another person. Changing the first of these only is within your gift.

Same old story: organisations facing change

Every year thousands of organisations - and the managers and staff in them - face change. In a couple of weeks I’ll be coaching a team where there’s been uncertainty and redundancy. I’ll be helping them look at their strengths, challenges, change and how embrace and hopefully shape the path ahead. And just yesterday I was with some former managers from City firms as they began to map out their next career steps.

Organisations in change is not a new story but an old one. Space, strategy, support, communication and transparency are among the keys to help change succeed - and to help those affected by change to grow. And ironically a powerful way to help organisations through change is to use the power of story. One colleague and friend of mine who does just that is Margaret Parkin author of Tales for Trainers and founder of Success Stories. I caught up with her for a brief chat last week as she stepped into London to run a masterclass. I asked her about why storytelling can be effective tool.

Tips for Public Speaking

It’s been an interesting week in which a couple of people and an organisation have asked me to coach them for public speaking.

Speaking publicly is in my bones: I left school at 18 and started my professional life in media which included training people to speak to the press and to appear on TV and radio. And before becoming a speaker / coach I was a singer and performer… so I understand what a performer, audience and the various ‘agents’ in between want.

Some people who may train you to speak and present overcomplicate matters - or worse try to get you to be someone else or bind you to rules which are at best guidelines. Speaking is an art. It is a dance between you, your audience and your message and objectives. It is, like all things, a relationship. The more rich and honest the relationship, the more engaging a effective a speaker you will become. Here my simple tips:

You & your story

• Who are you? What’s your story? What’s your style? What’s your purpose?
• Your biog, website etc need to reflect this
• Be, breathe, be rooted. Use your voice, passion, body, strengths and fears

Your audience

• Who are they? What do they want?
• What’s the brief and who is the customer? (build strong rapport with all )
• How can you win (often multiple audiences) over and be true to you?

Your message

• Clear, crisp, compelling: and relevant
• Start, middle, end (sandwich: strong start & end with a tasty / healthy filling)
• Sweet, seductive and simple… what outcome do you want?

The space

• View it, visit it, connect with it, change / re-arrange it
• Use it and own it
• Respect it and be at one with it

The tools / technology

• Which are right for you, the audience and the occasion?
• Use it, don’t, let it use you – be-friend it, learn how to use
• Have a back-up – be able to deliver without it

Tips
• Interact, invite, engage and involve
• Facts, figures, stories, examples, props, Q&A
• Plan, prepare and perform
• What works for you: some plan/prep/ rehearse/visualise endlessly, some never do
• Know when to embrace and break the rules

Above all: be you and honour, empower and entertain your audience. If you do this you will flourish.

5 Questions for you….

I have 5 questions for you. Four of them came to me a couple of days ago and the last yesterday. I asked them of the professionals / entrepreneurs at my new event The Mind Spa yesterday at Molton House in central London. And I invite you to ask them of yourself.

The awareness, asking of and gently acting on what emerges may be enriching and enlightening:

1) One thing about you that’s already great: Too often we overlook the magic we already have. Too often we see the imperfections and overlook our strengths and thus miss our possibilities. So many people I coach struggle with this. They have been blinded by - and bought into - the lies that they have been told about themselves throughout their lives.

2)One thing thing to let go of to create space: Perhaps there are physical things that are cluttering your home/ work space and hampering your emotional space. Let them go. Perhaps there are other issues to let go of.

3) One thing to accept and embrace: Sometimes in life there is no problem and some times the is no solution. The gift of life is simply to embrace it. Spend some time with this question gently.

4) One thing to focus on on the the coming hours and days
: Too often our minds are ineffective as our attention is spit into so many areas of concern and distraction. What one thing would make the most positive impact on your life - and based on that what should your attention, earnestness and action be focused on.

5) One person who can help you along the way: No-one is an island. No one or nation is completely independent without relationship to another. We are part of one whole. The more we fight that actually re-inforces that fact. What person can help you with the personal, professional or other concerns that face you. Sit with this. It may be someone you know by name or a type of person you need to seek. Who may be able to help you find this person - where might you begin.

Go about these questions with a light heart.
